hi can anyone recommend which companys are good. I am planning to buy an LCD. Also can u give me a good rate.

Go to a Fortress or Broadway store. The staff is pretty knowledgeable. Ask for someone who knows a lot and is good at explaining it.

As for brands, name brands cost more but tend to have better quality and picture. However picture quality is a very subjective thing.

Since I'm not a huge videophile, I didn't care which brand as long as it was a name brand. I went for the one which had a good promo price at the time. I am very satisfied with my LG but I have no idea how it compares with a Sony or something.

For me buying a TV is like a once in 5 to 7 years event and therefore I would not compromise on quality.

I compared Sharp Aquos, Sony Bravia, Samsung & LG. In terms of picture quality, nothing comes close to Sony Bravia's X series ( made in japan version). The price ranges from HKD 17 K to HKD 31 K ( 40 to 46 inches). Infact, i just bought the X3 series 46 inches and got a free 32 inches S400 from Broadway at HKD 28K plus a lot of freebies.

But beware, watching standard definition on LCD will be a bit of let down, so remember to change the picture settings to something less vivid, unless you're watching a high definition broadcast.

LG has one advantage - it's the most value for money and the screen is kid resistant. But if it's picture quality you're looking after - the Sonia Bravia wins hands down. Plus, Sony TVs can go on for 10 years without any defects.

Didn't know it was kid resistant! I get nervous when they get to close to our LG. ;)

While I am very satisfied with our LG, the design is not exactly inspired. It's a bit bland, and completely black. The Sony models are much nicer looking. Of course, when turned on you don't notice any of that very much. ;)
