Personally no, my daughter was actually quite late compared to most girls nowadays. But if I was in your shoes, I would go down the medication route to try and supress the puberty signs, at least for a couple of years, children of that age would have trouble mentally coping with periods I think. I would try and keep her childhood going a bit longer. Even a simple thing like going swimming will be a huge deal if she has things like tampons to worry about. I've read a few stories over the years of people this happened to, and I think in all of them the parents shows the injections. Good luck with your decision.

I'm not an expert but I would agree with cd.

I'm a man but I did ask my former swimmer wife. This is not really a huge deal. Put tampon in. Put on swimsuit. Swim. It's only a huge deal if you make it such.

Whether to put your daughter on medication is a personal choice. I would not go that route. Just let nature takes its course naturally. I got my period when i was 10, and it didn't bother me so much. You wouldn't want your daughter to think taht it was something bad and feel ashamed of it. I think by giving her meds, she might feel it's an illness rather than a natural part of being a woman.

my niece got it when she was 9. she is now 12 and never bothered by it at all. She was and is enjoying like any girl age 9-12. It never bothered my sister or her mom too and never she will go for any med for her girl.

To axpatguy,
agree its not a big deal to a woman, but to an 8 year old it would be. How would they explain that to their friends whilst playing over their Barbie dolls.

"agree its not a big deal to a woman, but to an 8 year old it would be. How would they explain that to their friends whilst playing over their Barbie dolls."
They'll just have to ignore the hecklers. Mean girls will always find something to tease their victims about. Real friends will not be bothered.

i think you should go the normal route and not give meds as who knows what long term effects medications would have?
but i do feel bad for your daughter gettting her period so early. it is a pain in the backside and i do think that it is a lot of emotional stress for a girl to take. specially since most of her friends wont be in the same shoes as her. That said you need to reassure her more and help her cope with it all..

i agree completely with "the goddess kali." Just give her all the adequate emotional support.

got it when i was 10, no big deal. by then we had the talk in school about what to expect. if she does get it, just make sure you pack some extra underwear along with the pads for school. i remember staining my clothes in the early stages quite abit. in fact what i also did was to wear a pair of shorts under my school skirt for extra protection until i was used to the whole idea of wearing pads and all.
i wasn't aware that you can actually take meds to delay it, thought when it happens, it happens. i would advise you take your daughter to a doc and professional advice.

Not to make jokes but if you start referring to it as "the burden of periods" things won't go so well.
She will take her cue from you. If you treat her concerns seriously but ensure she knows you don't think it's a huge deal, things should go well.
Most women I know don't treat periods as a burden. In fact most women I know don't let it slow them down unless they are having big pains. Make sure she knows that periods are not a hindrance to a normal life.
Conversely, make sure she doesn't take advantage of your excess concern to milk the situation. Not saying she would, but most kids are, consciously or not, rather good at taking advantage of their parents if they smell blood in the water.

I got my period when I was 9. It was actually a point of pride. Girls are more mature than we give them credit for, especially nowadays. Please don't medicate and give the impression of it being a bad thing. Give emotional support and explain fully the physicality of what is actually happening to her body. It's no big deal so don't treat it as such.
My biggest advice would be to encourage tampons as soon as possible. I had so many friends who used pads for so long because they were too scared to try tampons and suffered by having accidents and missing out on all sorts of activities and having to explain it. When they finally tried tampons they realized getting on with normal life was so much easier and kicked themselves for not using them sooner.
Good luck.

I am interested to know how the diagnosis was made? Something about my 9 year old makes me think puberty will start early for her too!

Hi Suze,
Please don't panic for your daughter. it does not happen to all the gilrs. but yes by and large it is becoming common for girls to have periods earlier than the required age.
Symptoms: once you see some hair around the armpit, pubic area and growing breast. some grils develp these things but still do not get thier periods until 12 or 13. however a regular chaeck up the doc can tell u.
Just relax!
thank you guys for all your expert advice. i am more confident now........

To my knowledge, ideally she can start using tampons when her periods are regular. Obviously you mist stress to her the importance of remembering its there otherwise she's open to possible TSS, Toxi Shock Syndrome.
