Olympics coverage and website

Posted by dizzyhytes (97 days ago)
I am trying to get coverage in HK and they are only covering it on 2 terrestrial channels and I believe nothing on Now. I don't understand, you are stuck with whatever they happen to be showing at the time, and you have no way of finding out what time they will show the replays at night, because TVB and ATV's schedules are in Chinese and/or don't contain any detail of what sport they will cover at what time.
Was talking with a friend in Singapore and they have added 6 special channels just to cover the Olympics.
Also, the official website is awful. I tried to read up a little about the athletes of the sports I like, but the site doesn't give the ability to search teams/participants by sport, only by country or by name.
The equestrian site is separate, but when you click on Participating Teams, you get some ridiculous blurb describing "What are NOC and NPC?" .
I am so frustrated. It's the same everytime when it comes to sport in HK. (Sorry but I need to vent)...!

Sportinglife.com isn't a bad sports website.

Joining you in venting dizzyhytes!
The coverage on TV here is absolutely dire. I foolishly thought that with being a host city viewers would be well catered for showing the wide range of sport on offer. Obviously not!
I was in the UK for the first week and never again will I slag off the BBC!
I am now keeping up to date on the bbc news website but can't access videos.
Anyone know of any websites accessible here where you can view on line.

Not live but the next day. Join UK Nova and get the Olympics PLUS loads of UK TV.

i am not sure why you complaint. there more than sufficient channels where you can watch olympics. ATV has 4 different channels, Pearl has 2 channels and one in english.

The English commentary on TVB is appauling. It is a real insult to our intelligence. Effectively they just read the names of competitors from teh captions and then give the results. The commentators seem to have little or no knowledge of the sports they are commentating on. The Chinese in comparison is very good with experts in teh filed giving opinions and information on rules and scoring systems. they pull in different people for each sport. I was watching the javelin on Pearl yesterday morning and the only thing the commenataor was telling us was the country of the competitor and the result of her throw and he could not even pronounce some of the countries properly utterly disgusting for a professional broadcaster.

I share the same frustrations. We have NOW tv and we need to subscribe to some ridiculous summer package on top of our current subscription, just to watch the Olympics. I have missed out so many exciting moments and feel totally helpless. The only ways it seems are to pay through our nose; watch at a local pub; go to our club (which is not conducive for cheering and general 'wild' behaviour). Of course, I would much rather stay in the comfort of my home and watch the telly whenever I want, at my convenience.
To F355 - Could you share more about HOW to get the channels you have mentioned? Most of us here are not native HK citizens nor as experienced with the local works, as you seem to be. Hope you can tell us more.
Cheers, J

Janet - you need to connect your TV to the RF antennae slot in the wall of your apartment ( most buildings have this connectivity - if you're confused, then check with our property manager). Once you've connected the cable, all you need to do is a scan of the free channels ( and you'll get all channels from Pearl and ATV)
But I have to agree with 190K, the English commentary is terrible. There is a commentator called "kiki" who doesnt know what he's talking about. Some of his comments could even land the channel into trouble in a more mature country.
"He definitely looks swedish' - comment on a black guy representing Sweden in track & field was in bad taste.

i have free to air and can only see 2 channels covering the Olympics live. Am I missing something?

My family sit there flabbergasted at the utter unprofessionalism and as mentioned, complete lack/absence of knowledge by "Kiki" and his offsider. A bit of research on the competitors and which country they're representing would help. What a disgrace, not to mention embarrassing!

TVB has 2 channels, Jade and Pearl with tons of coverage all day. Jade is Canto but has english NICAM subchannel, while Pearl is English only. ATV has 1 English channel and 1 Chinese channel

as for the commentators, ALL OF THEM, whether Eng or Chi, should be fired. The Eng. guys are completely lost in every sport they cover, and the Chi blatantly cheer for Hong Kong/China, something I've never seen watching N.A. sports (yes there is national bias, but NOT group cheering and clapping in the studio!) And they are NOT experts in their field, but minor B-list celebrities in the local scene.

Thanks Singh is King... The landlord, during renovations, had accidentally replaced the RF slot with one labelled as 'CABLE TV', therefore we didn't touch it. My fiance's opened it and wired the whole thing up for us last evening, and we are now enjoying (with very poor and distasteful commentaries - Agreed!) the Olympics in our home.
Cheers!
